A major fire outbreak occurred few days ago along the Ikom Bridge in Cross River State after a fuel tanker lost control and burst into flames. Eyewitnesses reported that the incident, which happened at a sharp bend shortly after the bridge when approaching from Calabar, thankfully resulted in no loss of life NEGROIDHAVEN can say.
According to an eyewitness account, the tanker driver, in an attempt to give way to another tanker descending the hill at high speed, lost control at the sharp bend. The back of the tanker reportedly hit an object, leading to a fire outbreak.
The driver and his assistant narrowly escaped as they managed to detach themselves from the tanker before it was engulfed in flames. “The guys were lucky to break free from the tanker and came out unhurt,” the eyewitness recounted.
However, the absence of a fire service at the scene raised concerns among residents and commuters. No fire service personnel were in sight to contain the blaze, which spread rapidly due to the highly flammable nature of the tanker’s cargo.
Residents expressed gratitude that no lives were lost but emphasized the urgent need for improved emergency response services in the area, especially given the critical location of the Ikom Bridge, which serves as a major transport route in the region.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
