The Honorable Commissioner For Health, Cross River State, Dr. (Mrs.) Inyang Asibong with SA to the Governor on Community Health Dr. (Mrs.) Betta Edu join the globe to mark World Cancer Day which was founded by the union for International Cancer Control to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. They raised awareness of cancer and how to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment to students and staff of Girls Secondary Big Qua Calabar with
Calabar Golden Leo Club in attendance.
Marking World Cancer Day with the theme "WE CAN. I CAN" is a chance giving to every single person to make a difference in the fight against cancer. The theme inspire action, create healthy environment, build a quality work force and shape policy change.
World Cancer Day is Mark on every 4th February of the year.
Cancer is a disease condition whereby cells proliferate abnormally, ignoring growth – regulating signals in the environment surrounding the cells.
HEALTH PROMOTION THAT CAN REDUCE CANCER RISK
-Increase consumption of fresh vegetables because studies show that roughage and vitamin – rich foods help to prevent certain kinds of cancer.
-Genetic counseling /testing can be useful for people with certain types of cancer that seem to run in their families.
-Practicing weight control because obesity is linked to cancers of the uterus, gallbladder, breast and colon.
-Increase fiber intake as it reduce the risk of certain cancers (eg, breast, prostate and colon).
-Avoid over exposure to the sun, wear protective clothing, and use a sunscreen to prevent skin damage from ultraviolet rays that increase the risk of skin cancer.
-Recommend increased intake of Vitamin A reduces the risk for oesophageal, laryngeal cancers.
-Reduce alcohol intake, it increases the risk of liver cancer.
-Recommend increased intake of foods rich vitamin C, such as citrus fruits protect against stomach and oesophageal cancers.
-Avoid smoking which accounts for 30 %of all cancer dead in both men and women, and it is one of the hardest cancers to treat.
-Reduce intake of dietary fat because a high – fat diet increases the risk for breast, colon and prostate cancers.
BREAST SELF EXAMINATION (BSE)
Breast self Examination is a modality used for the early detection of breast cancer.
STEP 1-Stand in front of a mirror.
-Check both breast for anything unusual.
-Look for discharge from the nipple, puckering, dimpling or scaling of the skin.
STEP 2.
watch closely in the mirror as you clasp your hands behind your head press your hands forward.
-Note any change in the contour of your breasts.
STEP 3
-Next, press your hands firmly on your hips and bow slightly toward the mirror as you pull your shoulders and elbows forward.
-Note any change in the contour of your breasts.
STEP 4
-Raise your left arm.
-Use 3 or 4 fingers of your right hand to feel your left breast firmly, carefully and thoroughly.
-Beginning at the outer edge, press the flat part of your fingers in small circles, moving the circles slowly around the breast.
-Gradually work toward the nipple.
-Be sure to cover the whole breast.
-Pay special attention to the area between the breast and the underarm, including the underarm itself.
-Feel for any unusual lumps or masses under the skin.
-If you have any spontaneous discharge during the month – whether or not it is during your breast self Examination – see your doctor.
-Repeat the examination on your right breast.
STEP 5.
-Step 4 should be repeated lying down.
Lie flat on your back with your left arm over your head and a pillow or folded towel under your left shoulder.
-Use the same circular motion described above.
-Repeat on your right breast.
