Recently, Nigeria's apex court, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, ruled in favour of Governors Udom Emmanuel and Nyesom Wike of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States respectively, upholding their elections.
This trend has incited reactions from designated quarters like the presidency, etc. Last week President Muhammadu Buhari was reported to be saying that the judiciary 'is my headache'. While, the National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress-APC, John Oyegun called for the probe of the Justices of the Supreme Court.
This compelled Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce, commonly referred to as 'the common sense senator' to take a backlash at both Buhari and the APC national chairman through his Facebook page. Read what he said concerning the topic under review:
'Dr. Goodluck Jonathan lost elections and was man enough not to even challenge it in court. You lose and you want EFCC to investigate Supreme Court Justices! Who is CLUELESS between a man who did not love power at the expense of his nation and you who want to destroy our judiciary to satisfy your lust for free oil money?'
'First President Buhari called the judiciary a "headache", now his party chairman threatens them with investigation. Are we safe like this? Where is the doctrine of Separation of Powers? Where is the Rule of Law? If Supreme Court Justices can be threatened with anti corruption investigation for not bowing to the party in power, what are we then to make of the war on corruption?'
-Ben Murray-Bruce, 5 February 2016
Methinks, the judiciary should be allowed the freedom to do their constitutional business. The separation of power principle should be ultimately upheld in Nigeria's politics to save our fledgling democracy from imminent collapse.
