Cross River State Government has worked out plan to collaborate with the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Nigeria (SOGON) in rendering obstetrics and gynaecological services to women that will kick off on November 2016.
The planned meeting took place yesterday 5 August in the office of the Commissioner for Health where members of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Nigeria (SOGON) volunteered their services for the adopted primary and secondary health facilities across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Commending the society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, for accepting to collaborate in providing obstetrics and gynaecological services, the Health Commissioner, Dr Inyang Asibong assured of the state Health sector readiness in providing all what is needed for the success of the programs and implementation in all the adopted primary and secondary health facilities.
Dr Asibong stated 'Since maternal mortality is the health indicator with the greatest disparity between developed and developing countries, we are committed to providing comprehensive family centred obstetric services including labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn care. As we collaborate, we must take responsibility in research and implement programs to reduce maternal mortality. We must help women to take holistic approach to their health through excellence innovation in patient care, scientific discovery, education and advocacy'.
'We plan to collaborate and intervene by instituting the following programs in the state: pre pregnancy counselling, pregnancy care of normal and complicated pregnancies, ultrasound, family planning, reproductive surgery and Cervical cancer screening to about 1.5 millions of women across the three Senatorial district '.
Speaking during the meeting, Dr Mabel Ekott, the State President of Society of Gynaecology and obstetrics of Nigeria said' we have identified the high maternal mortality and Cervical cancer deaths as high priority in our country. We are blessed with highly skilled professionals who will render obstetrics and Gynaecological services to women through Volunteer obstetrician scheme where our members will visit adopted facilities once a month and render clinical services, trainings and also conduct research, birth preparedness intervention and Cervical cancer screening.
