Orok and Viktoria

Efio-Ita Nyok|21 August 2016

In what looks like a wedding anniversary's reaffirmation of sublime love between two love birds, the Executive Chairman of Cross River State Sports Commission and former Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, entered sumptuous lines in black and white in obvious reaffirmation of his love to his spouse, Viktoria. He titled the poem —Stay for a While. And I couldn't help but stay for a while savouring the entire 5 paragraphed poem meant 'for Viktoria Duke'.

In the foremost paragraph, Orok sues for consistency in the togetherness that already exists between himself and Viktoria. In the succeeding paragraph, as a follow up to his amorous suite he assures Viktoria that despite the changes in society, he would always be by her side. In fact, he reminds her of an earlier promise in the following adorable words, 'I have said this before, You are what I am living for'. Hmmmmm!

As if to reaffirm the tone in the third paragraph, he opens with this line, 'It has always been you'. 'I really know you…In both the night and day', Orok confesses to Viktoria in the fourth paragraph as if to reply her in a conversation in which she may have said, 'But you know me, I will always love you'. 'The promises we made And those that we have kept,
Shall keep us to the end', were the auspicious words with which he characterised his fifth and last paragraph. What a poem, what an expression of love!

Excerpt:

STAY FOR A WHILE
(For Viktoria Duke)

Let us continue to live our lives together,
Treasure every moment that we have gathered;
As I pull the shades
And look into your eyes,
I still see the same sparkle I saw years ago.
I shall bath in the fading glow
Of your attention;
Nothing has changed,
Nothing will change.
We have endured pressure,
Knowing that the cream
Would eventually flow to the top.

Our world will keep changing
With time passing us by,
With me here by your side.
When doubts spreads
Its pernicious tentacles,
Seeking to eschew
All that we had achieved,
Success would have secured comfort,
In the couch of matrimony –
With our parchment as a testimony.
I have said this before,
You are what I am living for.

It has always been you
And will always be you.
Close your eyes
And visualize
The conundrums in the horizon,
Those that may still come
And those that we have overcome;
Look for the other wafting reasons
That pelted our benedictions –
By the power of our love,
And guidance from above,
We made each of our fantasies to come true,
Did not just saunter through,
But stayed on the cusp of many breakthroughs.

I really know you
And can vividly recall how good it has been.
What we have,
Surpasses the morning dew
That scampers on the arrival of the sun,
We vowed never to part
And our vow was " until death do us part."
You have always been my anchor
And my stay,
From when we were young and gay,
Until we grow old and gray.
We shall continue to pray
Everyday,
Keeping the flame alight
And shining bright,
In both the night
And day.

The promises we made
And those that we have kept,
Shall keep us to the end.
When the high flying birds shall return to the roost,
The Owls will hoot
An applause to lives well spent,
At the time that the sun returns to its tent,
In a celebration of the firmament's consent –
In the land of the silent.
