Achievers Wisdom House|11 October 2016
In December 2011, the United Nations women proposed October 11 as the Girl child Day. This is in line with the special attention the girl child deserves for proper social growth and capacity Development. This is in recognition of the various challenges faced by the girl child in most countries of the world. These challenges range from discriminating violence, denial of right/access to education etc.
This year’s Theme for the International Day of the Girl Child is, “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement”, this call for action to be taken towards the generation, collection and analysis of data focused on the girl child as it affects their potentials and sex disaggregation data.
The UN believes that as we step “One year into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, improving data on girls and addressing the issues that are holding them back is critical for fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals. One such issue that is standing in the way of girls’ progress is child marriage. The data is daunting—one in three girls in developing countries (except China) gets married before they turn 18. Girls who are child brides miss out on education, are more vulnerable to physical and sexual violence, and bear children before they are physically or emotionally prepared. The cycle of violence that begins in girlhood, carries over into womanhood and across generations. The 2030 Agenda must address their needs and unlock their potential.”
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the international day of the girl child, for us at Achievers Wisdom House, we see it as a perfect timing for both corporate and private bodies, government and individuals to join forces to uphold the tenet of the child right act with focus on the girl child. As we mark this day, let’s put structures and polices in place that will promote the Right to education for the girl child, Access to Education, provision of food and nutrition for the girl child, protection of the girl child all forms of discrimination and violence against women and child marriage.
On this international day of the girl child, we at Achievers Wisdom House have taken stand with the global community to support girls’ progress everywhere with focus in Nigeria as we say LET THE GIRLS BE GIRLS.
