Yesterday, 11 October was marked by the United Nations as the International Day of the Girl Child. This year’s theme was: 'Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: A Global Girl Data Movement'. In a seven paragraphed thread the renowned social commentator called for equal rights between girls and boys. He sued for right to education, health, protection of lives, quality of food, etc for the girl child. He shunned early marriage, molestation, rape and violence. Excerpt:
'As the world celebrates today's International Day of the Girl Child, we must begin to give our female children equal rights as accorded their male counterparts', Prince Abi adviced.
'Our young daughters deserve the right to quality Education, proper Health-Care, quality food, and the protection of their fundamental human right as Nigerians.
'We must protect the girl child by saying no to early marriage, child molestation, violence, rape and lack of quality education.
'The girl child must be given attention in the society. The female gender must be adequately empowered and equipped to be the next super star in Nigeria, Africa and indeed the world.
'Our daughters can be the next Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Oprah Winfrey, Chioma Ajunwa, Dora Akunyili, Foloronsho Alakija and other women who have distinguished themselves in the society.
'The era of sending the girl child to hawk on the streets, and engaging them as house helps and forcing them into early marriages must stop. Happy International Day of the Girl Child!', Prince Abi concluded.
