The Ogons
Efio-Ita Nyok|18 October 2016
Comrade Abang Ogon, Ogoja-born, Cross River foremost and controversial student activist has his birthdays every 18 October of every year. This year's edition fell on Tuesday this week, barely two days ago.
Normally, especially for some, birthdays are celebratory days. For others, it's a day they sit back and make a retrospect of their lives for the immediate past anniversary/anniversaries. For instance, Nigeria's number one blogger, Linda Ikeji confessed that on her 30th birthday in 2010 after four years of blogging and trying other ventures with nothing to show for, she locked herself up in her room and cried her eyes out blaming God.
Ogon, our selfstyled 'jolly good fellow', probably planning to celebrate his live out on Tuesday with friends, colleagues, family members, etc was given a rude shock on such an auspicious day from no mean an individual than his dad, Pa Ogon. Comrade Ogon explains his experience himself. Read him out:
'My father just spoiled my birthday, he sent me this message today "AT 23 MY FATHER BECAME A MAN HE GAVE BIRTH TO ME AND TOOK RESPONSIBILITY; AT 23 I BECAME A MAN I GAVE BIRTH TO YOUR ELDER Onenu Ogon AND I BECAME A RESPONSIBLE MAN, TODAY YOU ARE 23 WHAT HAVE YOU DONE??"(emphasise was his).
This statement riveted Comrade Ogon's constitution such that he couldn't help but express the above on his social media timeline. As you can see, he said that his birthday was 'spoiled'.
'HE FURTHER PRAYED: MY PRAYERS AND HOPE ARE THAT FROM TODAY AT 23 YOU SHOULD BECOME A MAN. MAY GOD ANSWER MY PRAYERS IN JESUS NAME AMEN, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY DEAR SON YOU HAVE MADE ME PROUD', he concluded.
As a consolation, a handful of some family members and friends/allies attempted to help prop the seemingly battered psyche of our Comrade. One is his elder sister, Onenu Ogon, who said:
'Happy birthday my dear brother. Dad is telling u nothing but d truth.
'That does not mean u should father a child when u r not ready oooo. Time shall tell, just keep on pressing…'
Peter Odingha, the Honourable Member representing Ogon at the State House of Assembly (CRSHA) had this to say:
'Happy birthday my brother. Let me attempt to list what you have that your father didn't when he was 23.
1. You are on Facebook.
2 you have a phone.
3. Democracy.
4. Internet.
5. a degree.
If you put all this together u will greater than him. Of all I think he wish you well. Have a blast and take good care. God bless your mew age.'
I think these consolations worked because that day the present author spied on Comrade Ogon in a sit out with a beautiful damsel in company of other friends reveling as the jolly good fellow.
How I wish Comrade Ogon will actually become a man. Some of us want him to become a man probably he will be cool headed. Lol
Apy birthday in arrears bro.
