Calabar Municipality LGA has been rated as the best performing LGA amongst the thirty-two local government areas across the federation currently undergoing HIV intervention programme organized by the Family Health International (fhi360) NegroidHaven can say. This was disclosed by Dr Mariya Saleh; AD RMNCH, fhi360 Country Office during a courtesy visit of the team to the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong.
Dr Kolawole Olatunbosu; STD focal person, fhi360 Abuja, said Calabar Municipality Council is on the verge of completing the 90:90:90 UNAIDS treatment goal. He said 90% of all the people living with HIV in the area know their HIV status and 90% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection are receiving sustained antiretroviral therapy, although 90% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy are yet to have viral suppression the council is very well on course to achieving this feat.
In her remarks the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong was full of praises for the synergy between fhi360, the implementing partners for USAID, and the Governor Benedict Ayade led administration. She said the Ministry of Health will continue to give its best to ensure a healthy Cross River State for all whilst assuring fhi360 a continued support in their various intervention programmes. She stressed that the Cross River State Government achieved the feat with the support of USAID
The fhi360 State Programme Officer, Dr Henry Ayuk hinted on the the possibility of the intervention being stretched to 13 other Local Government Areas across the country and Cross River State will be given 3 slots following the success they have recorded through the Calabar Municipality LGA results.
According to the team if the LGA can achieve the 90:90:90 UNAIDS goal it would be the first in the whole world and the programme strategy of Cross River State could be adopted around the world as well.
Meanwhile the team has identified 40 health facilities across the state to carry out other interventions and are currently training more health workers in the State in this regard.
