Today's feature highlights a Calabar resident straining to whisper to the painting of Executive Governor of Cross River State located somewhere around Tinapa.
He is a Cross Riverian. And he's engaged in a symbolic act of speaking to His Excellency the Governor. This picture emphasises on the social contract that exist between the government and governed, between the leader and the led particularly before and after elections.
During election campaigns, the intending public officer speaks to the electorate. If the electorate listens, he/she is elected and a social contract is established. However, after the election the led begins to speak to the leader to remind him/her of the campaign promises. If he/she listens the contract is fulfilled otherwise, it's broken.
Here our subject is obviously straining to reach His Excellency's ear as he stares down at him smilingly. What's he saying to His Excellency? Is His Excellency even aware? He should be reminding His Excellency of his campaign promises two years after: of the Garment Factory, the Super Highway and the Bakassi Deepsea Port, the 1,000 a day employment, the putting of food on the table of every Cross Riverian, the food bank etc.
With the characteristic violence, bloodshed, kidnappings, assassinations, unpaid LGA salaries, pension benefits, unfulfilled campaign promises, and the list continues, has the social contract entered between Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade and the majority of Cross Riverians been broken or fulfilled two years after it was established? I think this is the question!?
