The actual purpose of local government creation and it's responsibility in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as we presume is to take the government to the people at the grassroot. And if this is the primary reason for this creation, why has it seized working in Cross River State?
One can not actually comprehend why the case of Cross River State is an exception in the committee of states in Nigeria because we believe that Nigeria as a country is being governed by same law. If this postulation is true, we believe that the APC Federal Government & PDP State Government are not fair to the people in Cross River. Suffice us to say that the APC dominated National assembly is wavering over salient issues of importance like the conduct of the LGA election in Nigeria with reference to Cross River State.
Nigerians woke up with a news of the National Assembly stopping LGA allocations to states without constitutionally constituted LGA administration. But that has become history today. Coming back to Cross River State and its excuses. We could remember hearing information that an astute man who holds a great deal for a new generation who has been saddled with the responsibility to administer the state Electoral Commission issued a statement that the state had no resources to finance election conduct in Cross River and with that, his commission is bereaved of funds to carryout it's constitutional responsibility.
This is an agreeable fact but one is also tempted to state that checking from the closes neighbour of Cross River State in terms of close States. One will take Ebonyi State as a typical example. LGA election had been long conducted there and information at one's disposal is that they receive from federation account far lesser allocation than Cross River State. Why is the fund an issue in Cross River state affecting the peoples right to government @ the grassroot. Not long from the first excuse of no fund, we learnt of another from the same Chairman of the State Electoral Commission and this time was the excuse of continuous voters registration (CVR) one is tempted to ask.
1. What has CVR got to do with the LGA election?
2. Will the people so registered in the ongoing CVR vote in the election?
3. When will the register from the current CVR be ready for use & the PVC too?
4. Will INEC give out an untested instrument for use without it being verified by INEC in an election?
5. Why did Lagos state & other states go ahead in the conduct of their LGA election when CVR is still ongoing.
6. Why is INEC that is conducting the CVR not compelled to withhold electioneering activities till the CVR exercise is over before the conduct of the bye Election in Osun West and finally, where did a state like Ebonyi State derive resources to conduct LGA elections?
More pressing questions begging for answers. Generation X plead for good governance and we advocate that the APC Federal Government and dominated National Assembly live up to its bidding and not only say things and leave them under the carpet. We also plead that the Government of Cross River State should make bold to allow the people have their government at the grassroot. We advocate that right thinking and reasonable Cross Riverians should make bold to demand from the government to conduct elections rather than compounding the issue by being sycophantic. Who or which party wins isn't an issue but let there be a properly constituted LGA administration in Cross River State. PDP, APC and the other existing political parties, let's ask for the right thing to be done. We can only succeed when we are detribalized, non sentimental, non political. Our desire.
