Information reaching us at Negroidhaven has affirmed the death of a middle aged Man, who allegedly ended his life by jumping from the 3rd floor of the popukar Lagos Magistrate Court in Ogba of Lagos.

According to our correspondence, the incident happened in the early hours of yesterday, after the Court ruled that the man be remanded in prison to serve a six months jail term for a debt of N40,000 naira.

Corroborating the incidence, "Niaraland avers that the man jumped from the 3rd floor of the Lagos State Magistrate Court in Ogba. Having being in prison on remand for the past 6 months. After his case today, he took the leap to his death".

This is disheartening. As one writer would put it, "The law should have a Human face". We cannot be question the morality of punishment in the Nigerian judicial system. What hope does the Legal System have for the poor? How about Joseph Fletcher's Situation ethics couldn't it have been applied in such cases as this so have avoided this man's death? I am reminded of 'African China' that ace musician's lyrics

"…Rich man go dey hala say.. 'mo dupe' while poor man go dey shout.. 'a wuola mme' (they've killed me)".

May his soul rest in peace. Let the wise take this to heart. Your contributions are welcomed.
