Credible information reaching our news desk avers that a Magistrate Court in Yaba metropolis of Lagos has today, Friday charged one Mr. Kalu Mba, a 58-year-old tailor,for allegedly raping and consequently impregnating a 15-year-old minor.
The victim, who was a ground nut hawker was said to have been put in the family way by the accused after He had cajoled her into bringing her wares to his residence in Makoko area of Lagos.
Laying credence to Vanguard, the prosecutor, Asp. Ibijoke Akinpelu told the court that the accused committed the crime sometime in July at No 11 Makoko Road, Yaba, Lagos.
Investigations proved that the accused had on several occasions bought ground nuts from the girl and also told her to always bring her torn dresses for amendment for free which she did.
But unfortunately on that fateful day, he forced himself on her, and had canal knowledge of her. Traumatised by the incidence, the teenage girl kept mute but when
she found out she was pregnant, she had no choice but to tell her mother what had befallen her.
“The case was then reported to the police and the accused was immediately arrested,” she said.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs. O.G Oghre, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Jan. 29, 2018 for mention".
We hope to keep you abreast with further developments from this incidence as it unfolds. While we cannot but question the rationale behind such barbaric act as we hope that the law will take its rightful cause in ensuring that justice is served.
