The Cross River State Government has dragged 19 firms, including hotels, fuel stations, bakeries and traders as well as some occupants of some residence to court over sanitation offences.
The government's action is in continuation of its determination to enforce sanitation rules in the state as well as punish defaulters to serve as deterrence to others who may want to break the laws.
The Cross River State Government, through its environmental agency, The Green Sheriff, took the various firms to court after persistent warning against the violation of the states environmental laws.
The Governor Ben Ayade administration, two years ago, established the Green Sheriff to be in the vanguard of ensuring that Cross River State remains one of the states with a high environmental sanitation standards.
Some of the firms that were dragged to the Revenue Court 13, along Moore Road, Calabar include Channel View Hotels, Pearl Suite Hotel, Axari Hotel, Mobil Filling Station, by SPC Junction and Clear line Publications.
The Chairman, occupiers of Suya Acade, Ezenwa Welding and Fabrication, Adrians Bread Bakery, All Traders at Ndidem Wsang Iso, All Business Operators Nsefik Layout, All Business Operators on Green Verge and Ita Ekong Landlord and all Occupants.
Others are The Landlord and all occupants of Trenchard Street, Calabar, Mercy Shop #82 IBB Way Calabar, Mrs Where Mercy Okoro Shop, Owner, all occupants of #10Beecroft Street, Calabar and Owner and all Occupiers of #12 Beecroft Street, Calabar.
The offences of the accused ranged from discharge of sullage water and food particles, failure to fumigate premises, allowed condemned diesel oil into public drainage, discharge of waste water into public drain and public road and allowing defective waste bin with offensive odour.
Others are allowing heaps of rubbles at back of premises, allow car wash in your premises, waste water flooding part of road, heaps of refuse in premises, overgrown weeds in the premises, failure to debush the premises, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, filthy environment, cobwebs on the walls of building and failure to provide standard waste bin allowing shanties and conversion of right of way into trading activities among others.
The case was adjourned to a later date.
