Ibesikpo Asutan– The family, friends, and well-wishers of the late Sir Edem Wilson Ubom gathered on Saturday to bid a heartfelt farewell to the esteemed educator, community leader, and devout Christian. The funeral ceremony, held in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, was attended by prominent personalities, including Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Commissioner representing Cross River State, who is the son-in-law of the deceased NEGROIDHAVEN has learnt.
Sir Edem Ubom, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 3, 2025, at the age of 82, was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to education, the church, and his community.
Born on June 25, 1942, into the family of Chief Wilson Nduke Ubom of Ikot Nkim and Mary Nyong Etim of Nung Essiet, Sir Ubom was a man of many hats—educator, peacemaker, mentor, and devout Christian. He began his teaching career in the 1960s and rose to become one of the leading headmasters of his time, retiring in 1994 as the head teacher of Offot Jubilee Primary School, Uyo.
A devout Methodist, Sir Ubom held numerous leadership roles within the church, including Church Steward, Circuit Steward, and Diocesan Treasurer of the Diocese of Uyo. He was also a lay preacher, a patron of the Boys Brigade, and a passionate hymn singer. His faith and dedication to the church earned him the respect and admiration of many.
Sir Ubom was married to Lady Ekaete Ubom for 60 years, a union described as a model of love, respect, and togetherness. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Mrs. Victoria Orok Duke and Mrs. Eme Uwem Tom, as well as six grandchildren.
In his community, Sir Ubom was known for his discipline, fairness, and commitment to justice. He served as the village secretary of Ikot Nkim and held the traditional title of “Udo Nsung,” the second in line to the village headship. Despite personal reservations, he accepted the role gracefully and served diligently until his retirement.
The funeral ceremony was a celebration of Sir Ubom’s life and legacy. Attendees praised his unwavering commitment to education, his exemplary leadership in the church, and his dedication to his family and community.
Orok Duke, who is married to Sir Ubom’s daughter, Victoria, paid tribute to his father-in-law, describing him as a pillar of strength and wisdom. “Sir Edem Ubom was not just a father-in-law but a mentor and a guiding light. His legacy of service, faith, and love will continue to inspire us all,” he said.
Sir Ubom is survived by his wife, Lady Ekaete Ubom; his daughters, Mrs. Victoria Orok Duke and Mrs. Eme Uwem Tom; his son-in-law, Orok Duke; six grandchildren; his brother, Mr. John Ubom; his sister, Mrs. Ime Raymond Effiong; and a host of other relatives.
