The ongoing controversy surrounding the sale of two unserviceable generators in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River state, has taken a dramatic turn as the Nigeria Police Force in the later part of 2024 issued invitations to prominent individuals for questioning. These summons are part of an investigation into allegations of fraud, conspiracy, and abuse of power linked to the sale of the generators NEGROIDHAVEN can say.
The generators, initially donated by former Governor Ben Ayade for street lighting during the Yakurr International Festival, became the subject of dispute following claims of vandalism, unauthorized sales, and financial impropriety. The investigation has now drawn in community leaders, state officials, and private buyers, with the police seeking clarifications from those implicated.
Police Invitations Issued
The Inspector-General of Police, through the Special Investigation Unit (IGP-SIU), has formally summoned Hon. Cyril James Omini, a member of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Eka Williams, the state’s commissioner for power and Chukwuemeka Peterson, a key consultant, for questioning. The invitations, dated December 2 and December 6, 2024, respectively, requested their presence at the IGP-SIU offices in Abuja for interviews scheduled for December 12, 2024.
Findings by NEGROIDHAVEN suggests that the police summons were not honoured by the state officials and private buyer for reasons which are yet to be established.
The letters cite the need to obtain clarifications on allegations implicating the individuals and emphasize compliance under Section 53(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. The police’s summons provided contact details for further coordination, underscoring the legal and procedural gravity of the invitations.
Background of the Case
The fraud allegations center around the sale of two Matrac Caterpillar generators, which were reportedly vandalized before their disposal. Adfoldam Nigeria Enterprise Ltd., represented by Mr. Ade Adetunji Adelani, claims to have legally purchased the generators under agreements with Ugep Community representatives, including a commitment to provide street lights and poles for the community.
However, the sale has since been clouded by accusations of bribery, forgery, and extortion. The Cross River Scrap Regulatory Agency, community leaders, and state authorities have all been implicated in conflicting accounts of ownership, terms of sale, and the fate of the proceeds.
Tensions escalated earlier this year when Mr. Ade’s team attempted to transport the generators but were reportedly obstructed by police acting on orders from Hon. Cyril Omini. Subsequent petitions to the police alleged harassment and misuse of power by various parties involved.
Community Reactions and Expectations
The Ugep community has expressed frustration over the handling of the matter, with residents accusing external influences of exploiting their communal assets. Many have called for a transparent investigation to unravel the truth and hold those responsible accountable.
A community leader speaking anonymously stated, “These generators were meant to benefit our people. Instead, they have become a source of conflict and division. We hope the police investigation will provide clarity and justice.”
