As the world commemorates World AIDS Day 2024 under the theme, “Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right!”, local government authorities across Cross River Southern Senatorial District have intensified efforts to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and provide support for affected individuals NEGROIDHAVEN has confirmed.
In Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Deborah Effiom Bassey, wife of the Executive Chairman, spearheaded a HIV awareness campaign on Sunday, December 1, 2024. The event commenced with a sensitization rally at Maternity Junction, where participants marched through major streets, distributing educational materials, engaging residents, and addressing misconceptions about HIV/AIDS.
The campaign featured free medical check-ups, HIV testing and counseling, and the distribution of condoms to promote safe practices and proactive health management. Speaking at the event, Mrs. Bassey emphasized the importance of education and community involvement in combating HIV.
“While HIV cannot be fully eradicated, it can be effectively managed with access to healthcare, proper treatment, and community support. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to building a supportive and stigma-free Akpabuyo where everyone can live healthy, fulfilling lives,” she stated.
A representative of the Local Action Committee on AIDS (LACA) lauded Mrs. Bassey’s leadership, noting her efforts in enhancing community participation and improving health outcomes in Akpabuyo LGA.
In Bakassi Local Government Area, the 7th Bakassi Legislative Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Grace Bassey, reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the HIV/AIDS pandemic through legislative action, representation, and oversight.
In a statement issued on December 2, 2024, Hon. Bassey assured residents that the Assembly would continue to implement measures aimed at reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS in the community. She also extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones to the disease and urged the public to support those facing stigma.
“As a legislative assembly, we are dedicated to addressing the challenges posed by HIV/AIDS in Bakassi. Through our work, we will ensure that the fight against this pandemic remains a priority,” Hon. Bassey declared.
She concluded by encouraging residents to prioritize their health and utilize available healthcare services to safeguard themselves against HIV.
