BREAKING: Akpabuyo United FC Booted out of Governor’s Cup 2024

Ikom– Akpabuyo United FC’s spirited run in the 2024 Cross River State Governor’s Cup ended in heartbreak as they were eliminated at the group stage despite impressive performances. The team, competing in Group C at the Ikom Centre, managed a total of four points but fell short of qualifying for the knockout phase NEGROIDHAVEN can report authoritatively.

The annual tournament, themed “Building Grassroots Talents for Youth Empowerment,” is organized by the Cross River State Football Association in collaboration with the Office of the Governor. It has brought together teams from across the state, fostering competition and youth development.

Akpabuyo United kicked off their campaign on November 29 with a closely contested 2-1 loss to their neighbors, Atlantic Warriors FC of Bakassi. Despite the setback, the team displayed resilience in their second match, securing a 1-0 victory against Abi Waves FC on November 30.

Heading into their final group-stage match on December 1, Akpabuyo United needed a win against Ranch Pillars FC of Obanliku to boost their chances of progressing. However, a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the group leaders, coupled with Atlantic Warriors’ resounding 8-0 victory over Abi Waves, sealed Akpabuyo United’s fate. Ranch Pillars and Atlantic Warriors advanced to the knockout stage, finishing with five and seven points, respectively.

Throughout the tournament, Akpabuyo United enjoyed unwavering support from the Executive Chairman of Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Prince Effiom Bassey Effiong. Known for his passion for youth empowerment through sports, Hon. Effiom ensured the team’s participation was well-facilitated.

Speaking after the team’s elimination, his Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ekpo Effiom, commended the players and coaching staff for their performance. “The Chairman is proud of the team’s efforts and their determination to represent Akpabuyo. He urges them to take this experience as a learning opportunity and come back stronger next year,” Ekpo said.

The Head Coach of Akpabuyo United, Mr. Goodnews, echoed the Chairman’s sentiments, praising the team for their resilience. “Our boys gave their all on the field, and while the results didn’t favor us, we are proud of their performance. We will take this as a motivation to improve and aim for greater success in the future,” he said.

Although their journey ended earlier than hoped, Akpabuyo United FC has shown potential, and fans remain optimistic about their prospects in future competitions.
