Calabar –To mark the 2024 edition of the International Day of the Girl Child, Their Essence Foundation (ThEF) extended a day of support and encouragement to young girls living at the Lemna Dump Site in Calabar. The Foundation, committed to investing in the girl child for a brighter and more equal future, carried out an initiative to provide these girls with a glimpse of a better life, offering services, mentorship, and supplies essential for their wellbeing NEGROIDHAVEN has garnered.

The event featured the relocation of a group of girls from the dumpsite to the American Corner at the Women Development Centre, where they were engaged in activities designed to inspire and uplift. Here, the girls received healthcare services, including medical check-ups, enjoyed games and dancing, and shared a meal together. ThEF volunteers also spoke with the girls about their potential to become valuable citizens and encouraged them to hold onto their dreams.

Each girl received a bag with toiletries, sanitary pads, and other personal care items. Although they returned to the dump site at the end of the day, the Foundation pledged to support their journey towards a more stable life, including potential skill acquisition programs aimed at empowering them for the future.

“Our goal was to create a day of positivity and hope, to show these girls what they deserve and what they can achieve,” said Ms. Ekanem Ntiero, Executive Director of Their Essence Foundation. “Their smiles gave us a sense of accomplishment but also reminded us of how much more work is needed.”

Their Essence Foundation is now working on implementing further programs to support the educational and personal development of young girls facing hardship, aiming to reduce the prevalence of street life among young girls and create a safer environment for all.
