The Special Adviser to the President on Prosecution, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, Tuesday revealed he won't fret over the report of the amalgamation of the leading opposition political party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) with 30 other political parties which he describes as non-descript NegroidHaven has confirmed.
The presidential aide's disposition is premised on historical antecedent which according to him has never been successful. He traced antecedents from 1959 through 2011 where he submitted that the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) won't see the limelight of day.
His words, 'In the political history of this country , no coalition formed by political parties have ever won election in the country! So, based historical antecedents, I will not lose any sleep over the formation of CUPP by PDP and amalgam of thirty non-descript political parties in the country yesterday!
'The first coalition formed to fight the 1959 general election between the Action Group and the NCNC failed as the NPC coasted home with resounding victory but which was enough to enable them form a government! Eventually the NCNC and NPC entered into a coalition to form the government. This coalition crumbled in the wake to the 1964 general election. The NCNC and NPC parted ways; leading to the formation of the All Grand Progressives Alliance, AGPA between the NCNC, Northern Elements Progressives Union, NEPU ; Chief Obafemi Awolowo faction of Action Group and the NCNC!
'In the same vein, the NPC and the Nigerian Democratic Party led by Chief Ladoke Akintola (Premier of the defunct Western Region who had disagreed with Chief Awolowo and parted ways) formed an alliance known as Nigerian National Alliance which won the hotly disputed and controversial 1964 general election. Eventually the disagreement over the 1964 general election led to a crisis that resulted in the toppling of the constitutional order on the 15 January 1966 by the military! The military remained in political governance from January 1966 till 1st October 1979 !
'Another political coalition was formed in 1979 between the defunct National Party of Nigeria, NPN and the Nigeria Peoples Party after the NPN emerged victorious in the 1979 general election to win the presidency but failed to win majority of seats in the National Assembly! The NPN produced the Senate President in the person of Dr Joseph Wayas of the NPN; while late Chief Edwin Umezoke of the NPP became the Speaker of the House of Representatives! However, this coalition collapsed again in 1982! Again, in the wake to the 1983 general election, the defunct Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN; NPP and factions of Great Nigeria Peoples Party, GNPP and Abubakar Rimi faction of the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP formed the Peoples Progressives Alliance, PPA to fight the election but woefully lost to NPN! Yet again, in 1999 at the election to usher in the present constitutional order, the defunct Alliance for Democracy, AD and the All Peoples Party, APP formed a coalition to fight the PDP in the presidential election but failed to win! In 2011 the defunct CPC and ACN attempted to form a coalition to fight the PDP but equally failed ! No coalition has ever won any election in Nigeria!
'CUPP will surely not be an exception!'
But, Obono-Obla seem to have left off the 2015 coalition of: nPDP, rAPGA, ACN, CPC, PPA?
