The Abia state House of Assembly yesterday, 5th June, 2018 passed the anti-grazing bill into law. According to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chikwendu Kalu the bill is aimed at protecting farmers who have hitherto had their produce destroyed through open grazing.
According to him, "the law will eliminate the conflict level between both the farmers and the herdsmen" as movement of cattle shall only be through trains if they are passing through the state or conveyed through vehicles i.e trucks if they are to be moved from one point in the state to another.
Also, the law demands for ranches to be established by cattle owners who want to rare their cattle in the state or who want to do business here.
Explaining further, Rt. Hon. Kalu opined that ranching is the way to go and that the Abia State House of Assembly would promulgate laws that would be beneficial to its citizens as that is their primary duty.
Chief Kalu called on security agents to live up to their responsibility by ensuring strict compliance to the law and warned that defaulters would be duly punished according to the provisions of law.
