Second Chance Initiative (SCI), a non-governmental organization based in Calabar is to host the International Day of the Girl Child in Calabar.
The executive director and founder of SCI, Mrs. Lillian Oyama, in Calabar on Sunday said the event which is scheduled to hold Tuesday October 10, this year by 10am prompt at Government Primary School Ikot Anwatim of Calabar Municipality Cross River is to commemorate the day with focus on the health and hygiene challenges confronting the girl child in schools in sub-Saharan Africa using Calabar as a case study.
According to her This event is important to us because it will contribute to the development of the girl child, thereby enable her achieve her full potential in life.”
Highlighting on this years theme: the Power of An Adolescent Girl: Vision 2030 as held worldwide by the United Nations, Oyama reiterated the day as being designed to highlight and address the needs and the unique challenges young girls face around the world, while promoting girls and fulfillment of their human rights.
According to the NGO activities built for the day include, among other things the luncheon of a "Clean, Comfortable and Confident Girl Child" campaign aimed at enabling girls stay in school, and effectively manage their period without distraction.
The event also looks forward to creating awareness on menstrual hygiene management and to promote hand washing and personal hygiene among the girl child.
The key partners for this event include the Cross-River State Primary Health and Development Agency; UNFPA, CUSO International, Rotary Club of Calabar – Tinapa, Burst Development Initiative, Development Options, Girls Power Initiative, Prime Diamond Initiative for Community Health, Sure Start Initiative, Daniel Iroegbu Global Health Foundation and many private individuals.
