Cross River State State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Honourable Asu Okang has distributed sporting materials to 3 Primary schools in Obudu and Ikom Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
The beneficiary schools includes, St. Theresa’s Primary School, Kakum and Ukpe Ugbang Community Primary School all in Obudu LGA in which the state Governor, Professor Ben Ayade and the Chief of Staff are alumni, respectively. The other school is Army Day Primary School, Afi Barracks in Edor, Ikom LGA.
Despite these schools being on holidays, Comr. Okang persevered to make sure this juicy gifts could not pass them by. The schools also responded by gathering the pupils and setting them up on their uniforms to receive the unnumbered items.
The items distributed includes; sport trophies, footballs, Jerseys, sport shoes and wears, sport gloves and other sporting accessories.
Distributing the items, Asu Okang said, the state government under Governor Ayade led administration is trying to bridge the gap between the educational system and sport as a career. “In the world today, sportsmen and sportswomen are celebrated and are the most rated. These group of people who have carved out a niche to earn a living for themselves started from somewhere.
“There’s no one that doesn’t know Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo or Usain Bolt or Serena Williams, this people started from somewhere. They have been influential to the society by their donations, motivation, people seeing them as role models, etc. This is why we have to catch our people young, so those who intend to make it their profession will pickup from here,” Okang said.
Asu Okang had earlier said before now that, the State Government is planning to host a State Sporting festival by 2018, which will come before the National Sports festival, all in the state. He reiterated that, the festival is to fetch out talents from the youths in the state and develop them to be able to fit into the National and international teams.
The sporting materials were distributed on Saturday and Sunday for St. Theresa’s Primary School and Ukpe Ugbang Community Primary School, Obudu. While that of Army Day Primary School was distributed on Monday by the Commissioner, Asu Okang himself.
