The Honourable Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Cross River State, Comr Asu Okang, has stated that young Cross Riverians barely constitute 5% of perpetrators of violence in the state NegroidHaven has learnt.
The youthful and youth aide to the Executive Governor of Cross River, Mr Ben Ayade, made this statement recently at the just concluded symposium organised by the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development in commemoration of the 2017 International Youth Day (#IYDCRS2017) themed, 'Youth Building Peace'. The Governor's aide who observed that indigenes of the state are contented even in the midst of lack, thereafter advised those already involved in violence/violent activities to desist from such trends, take advantage of the EU action on small arm proliferation and give their life a new meaning.
According to him, 'Let me categorically state this clear and I can provide records, Cross Riverians are very civilize even in the midst of lack not to engaged in social vices.
'Our young people barely form 5% of the total number of the perpetrators of violence. I urge those involve to take a U-turn, embrace peace and take advantage of the EU action on small arm proliferation and take alternative to livelihood provided by the government'.
Mr Okang further informed that come second week of September, his ministry would be commissioning what he referred to as the Multi-Sectoral Youth Programme which clearly delineates the policy of the incumbent administration of Governor Ben Ayade on Youth and Sports development.
Under the World Bank funded YESO Programme, Mr Okang, informed that his ministry would soon commence the payment of the sum of N7, 500 to young Cross Riverians.
He added that Governor Ayade has given approval for the establishment of the Cross River State Job Centre, the first in Nigeria. According to him, the Centre would be due for commissioning by first week of next month. The job centre would serve the purpose of collating the data base of all young Cross Riverians including their educational qualifications and skill-set and link them to major players in the private sector.
Three events, namely, Social Mobilisation and Awareness creation via radio and television, Youth Forum at Transcorp Hotel Calabar on the 11th of August, and inclusive exchange of information through a Twitter discussion with hashtag #IYDCRS2017 characterised the commemoration of the event in Calabar, Cross River State capital state-themed: 'Exploring the Entrepreneurship Potentials in the non-oil Natural Resources Sector'.
Representatives of CUSO, UNFPA, YOULEAD, MEDA, Development Option, Global Affairs Canada, security agencies, etc were present.
