Sequel to the 12th October award to Rt. Hon. John Gaul Lebo by the West African College of Nursing, and in recognition of his outstanding contributions in maintaining and promoting nursing education and practice, the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon John Gaul Lebo recently received an award of Excellence from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).

The Speaker who appreciated the NANNM for the honour conferred on him; pledged to do more to ensure that the health sector in the state was among the best in the country.

As part of activities geared at building capacity of Nurses and Midwives to enhance performance and effective service delivery, Rt. Hon Lebo disclosed that the Assembly would liaise with the executive to ensure that 20 teachers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery would be trained yearly, while frowning at the idea of duplicating school of Nursing and Midwifery across the state.

Decrying funding as a major challenge, he however submitted that NANNM could write the governor through the Commissioner for health for an executive bill seeking the decentralization of the School if it so wishes.

In his presentation, the Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Cross River State chapter, Comrade Ojong Ofut commended the Speaker for the commitment towards repositioning the Cross River Health sector for optimum delivery, adding that the passage of the Health Insurance Law and the Law establishing the State Primary Healthcare Agency were very instructive.

He appealed for the decentralisation of the school of Nursing through the amendment of the extant law to establish School of Nursing in Calabar and Ogoja while increasing funding as well as improve infrastructure for the school and the employment of more nurses and mid wives to address the deficit in manpower.

It would be recalled that Rt. Hon John Gaul Lebo in the 7th Assembly sponsored the bill for the law which established the Cross River State School of Nursing and Midwifery, Itigidi.
