A non-profit, non-governmental organisation named Ambassadors for Positive Impact, Nigeria (API) recently organised a capacity building workshop/serminar for secondary school students in Calabar metropolis. The said capacity building workshop/serminar comes under what is referred to as Project Go To School 2016. And was conducted in Big Qua Girls Secondary School on Wednesday 21 September.

Mr Enyam Joseph-Kelvin the Director General of API Nigeria while speaking on the topic: 'Quality Education in Public Schools; the Role of Parents, Teachers & Government', opined that individual students of a given school play designated key roles in representing the school. He advised government towards investing more in infrastructural development in public educational institutions. However, Mr Joseph-Kelvin also noted that, the business of investing in the educational sector shouldn't be left to government alone, adding that parents, private individuals and corporate organisations have salient roles to play.

In his words, 'individuals must not wait for government at all times, we should  take capacity building especially in our educational sector serious because if we don't build capacity today we will end up looking for people who will occupy leadership positions in society tomorrow'. On her part, a representative of State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs Pauline Inagu said the state government is working especially in the educational sector with plans already on ground to distribute over 10, 000 copies of textbooks, adding that the initiative by API is a good one. 'API Nigeria should not just do this once, there are so many children out there who don't have the financial means to go to school, government will assist initiatives of this nature where possible', Mrs Inagu explained. On their parts, some of the students who reacted called on government to invest more in infrastructural development of public schools.

The workshop/serminar had in attendance Mr Esekpa Eyong, Ebiala Monda both of the University of Calabar Students Union Government, cross section of students of the school, representative of the Managing Director of Cross River State Water Board Limited, journalists and a handful of teachers of the school.

High points of the workshop/serminar was the presentation of exercise books to students of the school by the DG of API Nigeria, Mr Enyam Joseph-Kelvin.
