Annually, 8 September world over is designated Literacy Day by UNESCO, an agency of the United Nations. The theme for this year 2016 is —'Reading the past, Writing the future'. Besides, this year marks the 50th anniversary of UNESCO commemorating this day worldwide. According to the Director General of UNESCO: 'The world has changed since 1966 – but our determination to provide every woman and man with the skills, capacities and opportunities to become everything they wish, in dignity and respect, remains as firm as ever. Literacy is a foundation to build a more sustainable future for all'.

As usual government institutions, NGOs and related corporate organisations commemorate this day through advocacy actions, courtesy calls, press releases, conferences/workshops, etc.
In Calabar, Cross River State capital this day will be marked by Achievers Wisdom House and N-Dickson Foundation. The already mentioned duo are NGOs based in Calabar already involved in dealing with street children in varied respects especially the education of the kids.

Achievers Wisdom House and N-Dickson Foundation as respectively chaired by Messrs Favour Ukorebi and Nsikan Dickson will be embarking on a 500 person Walk Against Illiteracy through designated spots on the streets of Calabar, the capital city on Thursday 8 September and what they refer to as Street School immediately after the walk. The Walk Against Illiteracy will be an advocacy exercise while the Street School embodies counseling and teaching sessions for the street kids. Take off point for the walk will be Mary Slessor Roundabout by 6:30AM.
