Reliable information reveals that Mr. Cletus Ekpo, the Transition Committee Chairman of Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, yesterday attacked by suspected assassins who opened fire on his vehicle hereby killing his Police Corporal attached to him as an excort.

According to our source, several shots made on the vehicle, left bullet wounds on Mr. Cletus and his driver but unfortunately, claimed the life of the police orderly who died on the spot.

NHB garnered that the assailants were said to have left without taking any money from the huge chunk, the Chairman withdrew from the bank.

Leaving us to suspect a case of attempted Assassination rather than armed robbery.

Further details from our correspondence, posits that the gunmen meticulously trailed the victim's car to Mbiokporo Bridge in Enen Nsit, Etinan, and there bombarded the vehicle with  bullet shots at close range, after which they disappeared into thin air.

In Cletus Ekpo's words :

“I came out of a bank where I went for a transaction. I then drove on to Aka-Etinan Road, enroute Etinan and then I noticed that a car was following me. I did not bother.

“As I got close to the Mbiokporo Bridge, the car drove closer and the next thing I heard was several shots fired at us and then they asked ‘where is the money, where is the money?’.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Cordelia Nwawe, confirmed the incident, adding that the chairman and the driver were responding to treatment in a hospital.

She spoke regrettably and argued that the police corporal attached to the transition Chairman died while trying to prevent an attack on his principal from dare devils. An action she purports is  courageous and brave.

Meanwhile, the Government of Akwa Ibom has issued a statement through the commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Aniekan Umanah,  forbidding members of the public to loiter around banking premises or ATM booths. The statement also provides the police with power to commence general stop-and-search of people in the community with immediate effect.
