The Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency bill would soon be passed by the Cross River State House of Assembly.
Speaker, Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon John Gaul Lebo hinted recently when he received a delegation of the National Association of Community Health Practitioners in his office.
Lebo said that various challenges encountered by community health system and practitioners in the state would be put to rest with the passage of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency bill, adding that primary health would receive a major boost in the state.
He assured the Community Health practitioners of the Assembly’s willingness to domesticate the national policy on health, with a view to giving the association a good footing in the state amongst others.
The Speaker said that the Assembly would work closely with the security agencies and other stakeholders to address issues of insecurity faced by the health practitioners in the line of duty, calling on the health workers to channel all petitions to the House Committee on Health while challenging the illegal compulsory deductions from health related associations since membership was not compulsory.
Earlier, the National Vice President and South-west Co-ordinator of the National Community Health Practitioners, Comrade Miller Afolabi Williams said the visit was necessary to seek the Assembly’s support for the Association which was going through serious challenges.
Comrade Williams informed that members of the Association have not been promoted since 2009; community health workers faced security threats in the course of doing their work and lack of training and retraining of members to cope with contemporary health needs of the people as well as inadequate logistics and illegal compulsory deductions made from their salaries even when affected members do not belong to associations for which monies were deducted.
