The Commissioner for Health Dr (Mrs) Inyang Asibong has inaugurated the state committee on Maternal Perinatal Death Surveillance Response (MPDSR) and tasked the members to be committed as they have serious work at hand.
Dr Asibong reminded the MPDSR members of the enormity of their assignment as the task ahead is for them 'to drastically reduce the rate of maternal and child deaths in the state's health care program', she said.
The twenty one member MPDSR team has the Director of Medical Services, Dr Ogban Ikpoti as Chairman while the Reproductive Health Coordinator, Elder (Mrs) Bassey E Duke, is the Secretary.
Commissioner Inyang Asibong used the occasion to appreciate International Donor Partner Organizations, Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Society for Family Health (SFH), World Health Organization (WHO) and Community Based Organizations and other bodies for turning up at a very short notice which underscored their understanding of the onerous task of saving the lives of mothers and new born children in the state.
The Director General of Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr (Mrs) Betta Edu, in her good will message to the MPDSR team, admonished the team to be highly committed to reducing the rate of maternal and pre natal deaths, adding that it takes the issues of mother and child health care as very important.
Dr Edu called on the donor partners to be prepared to go out of their ways to support the State Government while stressing the Agency commitment to stem maternal and children under five deaths.
Good will messages were delivered by representatives of United Nations International Children and Education Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Funds for Population Activity (UNFPA) World Health Organization (WHO), Pathfinder, National Primary Health Care Agency (NPHCA) and National Council of Women Society (NCWS) among other partners
The Medical Superintendent of General Hospital Ogoja and a member of MPDSR team, Dr Patrick Ubi gave power point overview of the activities of MPDSR across the state.
