United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) earlier in the week donated 400 delivery kits to Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency as part of their support for the Flag-off of Maternal and Child Health Week 2016.

Receiving the item, Director General, Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Mrs. Betta Edu thanked the organization for their support to CRS and the Mediatrix Development Foundation.

In her words, "the delivery kits will go along way to help pregnant women in the state. Part of the challanges faced by most women in rural areas of CRS is their inability to buy certain items required of them for delivery. She noted that although we offer free health services for pregnant women in CRS, non availability of delivery kits have formed a new barrier preventing women from utilising health facilities and skilled birth attendants during delivery". She further highlighted there are 59% of women who deliver with unskilled birth attendants and the high maternal mortality rates of 576 deaths/100,000 life birth stating that unless useful interventions like these are brought to bear by stake holders, CRS and indeed Nigeria may not achieve SDG 3 by 2030.

She lauded UNFPA for always assisting the state and promised to uphold the long standing partnership between the agency and the organization. She also listed other interventions put in place by the able digital Governor of CRS to reduce maternal mortality in the state.

Earlier speaking, Dr Kenneth who handed over the kits to the DG of the agency said as partners, their primary objective is to support the state whenever they are called upon to do so. He eulogized the digital Governor, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade for his passion in revitalizing Primary and Secondary Health in the state. He went further to praise Her Excellency, Dr. Mrs. Linda Ayade, wife of the CRS Governor for bringing, Her Excellency Mrs. Aisha Buhari, wife of the president to flag-off the Maternal,  Newborn and Child Health Week, as well as the launching of Project Future Assured and Mediatrix Development foundation.
