It is no news that most students are confused on what to study in the university. So many students today in our schools are confused on what field they should follow. They do not understand the path to follow and so, you hear them talking about studying courses that they do not have a pre knowledge about and have the capacity to study. It goes to show that there is the need to introduce guidance and counselling in schools in CRS. There is the need to counsel young students on youth and career counseling.

I remember having a discussion with a young girl. And I asked her what she wanted to study and she told me she wanted to study Computer Science and I asked her what was her reason for choosing Computer Science and she told me she had done six months in computer appreciation. But after further discussions with her, I discovered that her actual field is in Public Administration and not Computer Science. This goes to show that guidance and counseling is needed in schools in Cross River State.

Looking at CRS, the state is in dire need of capacity, the state needs young intellectuals who would change the scope of things from worse to better and if the state must achieve huge success, schools in CRS must introduce guidance and counselling in their curriculum.

As a young man I do understand what young people experience. The state must begin to key into having youth counselors. Persons who would counsel the youth on Education, Health, cultism, crime, and issues affecting their general well being.

Young people are easily affected by inferiority complex. Most of them study what they do not want to study because of the feeling of superiority. They study what they do not have mastery over due to inferiority complex and as a result they get to force themselves into studying Medicine, Law, Nursing, Engineering etc. So the need to have a Guidance and Counseling unit in schools is to help these young students find out where they have mastery in.

Counselling courses need to be taught in schools in order to shape the thinking of our young children. Most young children today have developed the feeling of timidity, primitivity, inferiority and lack of self worth because they are not familiar with the accepted forms of etiquette.

The CRS Ministry of Education must introduce counseling courses in their curriculum. These is because, young people need love, care and counseling. They need inspirational talks, motivational and health discussion, human development, family issues, sexuality, and many more.

The Ministry of Education and the Department of Social Welfare in conjunction with the Ministry of Women Affairs must come together towards introducing guidance and counselling courses in school. It must be known that for Cross River State to develop, the State needs to advice youths on where they have capacity. They must be guided against immorality, cultism, abortion and all forms of social vices.

Books and lectures should be promoted on counseling. It should be known that counseling is needed in developing the mental health of people in the society especially the youths and children. It helps shapes their thinking.

I recommend that Guidance and Counselling should be introduced in primary and secondary schools in Cross River State.
