It is popularly argued that ..To solve a problem , we must first identify it. Indeed, people are talking.. at least..they are talking sense.
The Bornu State governor, Kashim Shettima has argued that the problem with Nigeria and her falling Economy is nothing than large scale corruption.
Our correspondence informs that Shettima made the above assertion at the National Forum on the Nigerian Economy which was organized by Vintage Press Limited in Lagos recently.
He alleged that Mr President Muhammad Buhari is working tirelessly so as to possibly address what according to him is the “corruption insanity”.
He lamented that this virus has eaten deep into the fabrics of our economy and has thus diffused into major sectors of our economy.
The Governor added that the Panama paper’s revelation of Billions of Dollars of our country's Naira equivalence is indeed an open secret.
" This startling revelation is only a tip of the iceberg".
Commenting further , He spoke regrettably about the economy of his state which according to him is a faded glory as it has been brought to ruin by the Men of the underworld, to wit, the Boko Boys.
He Governor while giving an address of the second day of the conference avers that the Boko Haram insurgents had claimed the lives of over 20,000 innocents of men, women and children while other several millions of people are being displaced from their homes along side with destruction of properties worth over $6billion US Dollars.
In his words as dubbed from the Nation online papers:
“30 percent of the houses were destroyed in the state including schools, primary health centres, infrastructure, water supply and electricity".
He made a plea for more investment in the educational sector of our economy stating that it is pivotal because the inequality in wealth distribution would hamper economic growth and development premised upon the fact that the few that are rich cannot be protected by the many that are poor.
My Critical comments:
It is not enough to talk about what the economy is and the numerous storms she has been confronted with, the Economist call it " positive Economic Dialogue" .
What we require and should focus on is what the economy ought to be.. and to achieve this we must unit all stakeholders and get them to the drawing board as they seek for ways to combat and overcome the impediments to our country's economic growth and development. This action is what Economic analysts and economists have labelled as "Normative".
Nigerians are tired of stories.. voices without action.. we need pragmatic action ..this is what summarizes the acclaimed CHANGE..But such CHANGE must be in the right Direction.!!!
