A young woman in her twenties was found dead after giving birth to twins in a Traditional Birth Attendant home at Boropit in Edim Otop, Calabar.
The deceased, Aniefon Oto Monday gave birth to Precious (female) and Godswill (male) at a traditional birth attendant home, Boropit Village Edim Otop Community in Calabar. She died early hours in the morning of the day she delivered as she never met her babies.
The Director General of Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Mrs. Betta Edu at the instance of Her Excellency Dr. Linda Ayade has since visited the bereaved family in Boropit Village, Edim Otop, Calabar as she vowed to clamp down on all Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) killing women in the state. She also assured the people that the owner of the TBA place, Mrs Etop Abasi Bassey will not go unpunished.
Dr. Mrs. Betta Edu, blamed the death of the lady on the recklessness and lack of skills of the TBA, she also said lack of referal and the nonchalant attitude of TBAs in Calabar has led to death of many women.
According to some eye witnesses, the woman died after complications arose from retained placenta and excessive blood loss. She struggled with life from 2.30am to 5am when she slipped into unconsciousness. The TBA failed to transfer the bleeding woman to a nearby health centre or hospital as they were trained. The officer-in-charged of the health post also noted that the morning Mrs Aniefon Monday died, a woman also gave birth in their Health post a stone throw from the TBA.
"His Excellency, Senator ( Prof) Benedict Ayade has sent me here to condole with you over the loss of your daughter and also take grand mother and babies to General Hospital for proper examination and test, expressing sadness and displeasure over the untimely death of their mother. The Governor and his wife, Dr. (Mrs) Linda Ayade are very concerned about the health and wellbeing of the twins and have decided to pay the medical bills for the twins and support their welfare until the family can take full responsibility. Dr. Edu informed the family and community heads who were present".
The babies were immediately taken to General Hospital, Calabar for examination and proper care, as she vowed to bring justice for the dead woman. Noting that the state government will not tolerate such occurrence henceforth in Cross River State.
Baby items and monies were given to the family of the children for their welfare.
