I just read with great disappointment that the bill to allow gender equality and violence against women failed to pass in Nigeria's congress.
It is hard to believe that in the 21st century some Nigerian men still consider it improper to be equal to their wives.
When the bible says wives be submissive to your husbands, submission does not necessarily mean being inferior or trodden upon.
If this bill has passed, it would have entitled women to take control of the children and their husbands properties if they are gone.
However, our male dominated society rejected the bill.
I consider this as a failure in our society.
In an era in human development where Hillary Clinton may become the next most powerful person in the world, that's when our politicians are invoking male superiority in matters of family, law and rights to superiority.
It will also be important to know how our legislative representatives from CRS voted.
A man who feels a woman has no rights to equality in my judgement is primitive and one hundred years behind time.
Those who subscribe to this thinking hide behind religion and tradition.
The fact that our traditions assigns certain roles to women does not make them less equal.
This mindset must change. That our wives cook, wash, clean, and make food, these are traditional roles, it should not be interpreted for being inferior or unequal.
It's time we know that equality is not a favor, it is a fundamental human right and our women deserve better. I stand to be corrected.
