The Director General of CRSPHCDB, Dr. Mrs. Betta Edu at the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Care Technical Committee meeting which held on 4th March emphasized on full implementation of the Integrated Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (IMNCH) Strategy; a high profile initiative to fast track the attainments of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr Edu who stated this over the weekend at a core technical meeting of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) noted that the IMNCH strategy would also prevent up to 72% of neonatal deaths; 70% percent of under-5 deaths and two-thirds or 62% of maternal deaths.

According to her the state Governor, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade and his wife Dr Linda Ayade through innovative strategies have been very proactive to issues concerning health in the state. The DG noted that IMNCH Strategy comprises high impact intervention packages that address the main causes of maternal, newborn and child deaths at community and health facility levels. It focuses on integrating maternal, newborn and child health services along the life cycle at all levels. It thus represents a paradigm shift; changing the way we do business to foster a continuum of care for mothers, newborns and children in an integrated manner.

The Commissioner of Health, Dr. Mrs. Inyang Asibong who chaired the meeting, in her remarks acknowledged the contributions and unflinching support of all partners working on MNCH agenda in Cross River State, specifically UNICEF and UNFPA for always demonstrating readiness to fund this core technical committee meeting and others health related programs. She urged the people to key into the vision and efforts of the state government to ensure the attainment of quality health care for mothers and under-fives.

High point of the meeting was debriefing of activities by Partners and Principal/Director school of midwifery, Calabar. The Principal, Mrs Grace M. Alim informed the commissioner and others that the school of midwifery has not been able to admit in recent years due to poor infrastructure, lack of accommodation for students but thanks to our amiable and energetic Governor, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade who through his intervention has build 50 room hostel apartment and upgrading of facilities, assuring the Commissioner and DG that the Council of Nursing in ten days time will be coming for accreditation and the school will begin admission of students.
