Cross River Commissioner for Health, Dr (Mrs) Inyang Asibong has promised the support of the Ministry of Health to Research Triangle Institute International (RTVEnision) on the programme of eradication of neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in the state.
Dr Asibong stated this during an advocacy visit by Research Triangle Institute International Organization in her office and hoped that the state Government would meet the terms and conditions of an expected memorandum of understanding (MOU) to achieve desired goal.
The Commissioner thanked the organization for the visit, adding that at the end of the envisaged programme of activities which would span five years, the state Government would achieve a lot in terms of elimination of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs).
Earlier the Resident Programme Advisor of Research Triangle Institute International, Dr Benjamin Nwobi informed that his organization was in the state to collaborate on the elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), stating that sponsoring body was in Washington DC, United States.
He mentioned some of the prevalent Neglected Tropical Diseases meant for eradication in Nigeria and the state in particular to include Onchocerciasis (River Blindness) Trachoma (Granular Conjunctivitis) Lymphatic Filariasis, Schistomiasis, Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness) among others.
Dr Nwobi said that his organization would return to the state between 14th – 20th February 2016 to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing process which will among other activities guarantee the restructuring of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) unit through equipping them, and human capacity building to ensure that public health programme in the state is in a position to provide improve quality service.
